Fujitsu Siemens has developed a monitor that does not consume power in standby mode

Fujitsu Siemens’ new monitor development aims to bring panel standby power consumption to zero.

The relay disconnects such a display from the power line after a certain period during which the image on it remains unchanged. Capacitors store enough energy to turn on the relay as soon as the signal from the external source resumes. Solar panels keep the energy charged, thanks to which the capacitors retain the necessary charge for five days.

The technology has already been developed for TVs and it is not a problem to implement it in computer monitors, says the vice president of Fujitsu Siemens, Rajat Kakar.

The company has applied for six patents protecting the technology, which will be applied in the first commercial products as early as next spring.

Statistics for the United Kingdom show that electricity bills account for 8% of standby energy bills.

It seems that many will want to sacrifice the complete noiselessness of their LCD monitor (the relay, when turned on, will still emit a small click) for the sake of economy. We are waiting for consumer products.
