We are talking about a physical random number generator, implemented in the form of an electronic circuit, which has reached the maximum performance indicator per chip area to date. Circuit occupying only 1200 sq.micron is capable of producing a sequence of random numbers at a speed of 2 Mbps. The development is intended for integration into smart cards and mobile equipment.
The circuit is based on a compact analog-to-digital converter that amplifies analog noise and converts them into random numbers in digital representation. The signal source is a noise generator developed by Toshiba. It generates noise using the stochastic phenomenon of electrons “trapped” in a layer of silicon nitride (SiN) formed in a transistor; the layer captures and emits electrons at a high speed.
It is important that, according to Toshiba, the generator is not affected by temperature fluctuations (tests were performed in the range from -50 to 100 ° C).
