SanDisk is about to launch the world’s first 16Gb 3-Bit-Per-Cell NAND chips

SanDisk said it expects to begin mass production of the world’s first 3-bit-per-cell (x3) NAND flash memory in March-April 2021. SanDisk’s standard 56nm process will be used to manufacture 16Gb x3 NAND devices. Interestingly, the new memory, in which each cell stores three bits of information, provides more than 20% increase in the output of chips from a single wafer compared to 2-bits-per-cell NAND memory, commonly referred to as Multi-Level Cell (MLC). at the same technical process standards.

In other words, the new memory offers the opportunity to improve production efficiency and reduce production costs. SanDisk has been developing the x3 architecture for the past two years. As a result, they are said to have achieved the same level of performance and reliability as SanDisk 2-bits-per-cell NAND devices. In terms of speed, the company says 16Gb 3-bits-per-cell NAND chips have a write speed of 8MB / s.

Inspired by SanDisk’s Flash Memory Partner Toshiba. Recall that another fruit of the joint work of SanDisk and Toshiba was the preparation of the mass release of Multi-Level (MLC) NAND flash memory at 43 nm.
