GeForce 9800 GX2, 9800 GTX, Radeon 3870 X2 in 3DMark and power consumption tests
Our Asian colleagues already have the opportunity to test NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GX2 and 9800 GTX video cards that have not yet entered the market and compare them with AMD’s flagship products.
So, the VR-Zone resource provides on its pages the test results of the three fastest video cards in March 2021 3DMark06. For comparison, we used a platform consisting of a Core 2 Quad Q6700 processor (2.67 GHz) and a motherboard based on the Intel P965 Express chipset. AMD Accelerator used Catalyst 8 driver beta.451, and for two NVIDIA accelerators – Forceware 173.67.
As you can see, on the current version of the drivers, the solutions of the Californian company, which have not yet been officially presented, are slightly inferior to the Radeon 3870 X2, which has been sold for more than a month. This once again confirms that the repeated postponements of the release of their flagships NVIDIA are caused by the desire to “polish” the software part and regain the throne in the segment of graphics accelerators for enthusiasts.
At the same time, another site, Expreview, was measuring the power consumption of a newcomer. He did it on a platform consisting of:
- Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 (3 GHz)
- Foxconn MARS motherboard (EIST and C1E technologies have been disabled)
- Memory: GeIL Plus + DDR2-800, timings 4-4-4-12
- Cooler: AVC Napoleon
- Hard Drive: Seagate 7200.10, 250 GB
- Power supply: Acbel ATX-550CA-AB8FB, 550 W
- Optical drive: ASUS BC-1205PT BD COMBO
The measurement was carried out by the device Seasonic PowerAngle, which literally measures how much is consumed “from the socket”.
The first group of tests was carried out at rest in Vista, after 15 minutes of inactivity, the second – under load in the form of ATITool Show 3D view for the same 15 minutes.
Here, only single-processor solutions took part in the tests and the ATI Radeon HD 3870 performed very well. However, it should be noted that NVIDIA also made a significant step in optimizing power consumption when developing accelerators based on GPU G9x. At least the GeForce 8800 Ultra was much more demanding in terms of power supply, and judging by the test results, a high-quality 300-350-W unit will suffice for new products.
