“Refusal” to promote HD DVD only strengthened Toshiba’s position

The topic of the war of optical formats, which has received so much attention on the pages of specialized publications over the past years, may soon lose its relevance. In any case, it seems that Sony has finally managed to take revenge on the world market for losing the Betamax vs VHS “war”, although, strictly speaking, this story has not yet been put to an end.

The reaction of Toshiba shareholders to rumors about the allegedly preparing an official statement about the refusal of further promotion of optical media of the new generation of HD DVD turned out to be interesting. The Japanese electronics maker allegedly rose more than 6% in just one day after an unnamed source within the company announced Toshiba’s intention to stop developing and promoting HD DVD.

No less interesting is Toshiba’s decision to invest colossal funds in the production of NAND flash memory. Recall that some experts consider removable media based on flash memory as one of the most likely “killers” of optical media for high definition video recording.
