Microsoft to add Blu-ray support to Windows

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said the company is developing software to add native support for Blu-ray media to Windows.

“We are already working, for example, on Windows drivers that will support Blu-ray drives,” Ballmer said at the Mix ’08 conference recently held in Las Vegas.

As you know, until recently, Microsoft supported the HD DVD format proposed by Toshiba. Microsoft’s change in position is a consequence of Toshiba’s decision to abandon the further development and promotion of HD DVD, caused, in turn, by almost all leading Hollywood studios to the side of Blu-ray.

Recently, it was reported that Sony and Microsoft are in talks to add Blu-ray support to the Xbox 360 game console. In addition, Apple is discussing with Sony the possibility of using Blu-ray optical drives in its products.

At the same time, Ballmer recalled that in the long term, Microsoft sees the Internet, not disks, as the main channel for the delivery of high-definition content.
