NVIDIA Lead Shares Perspectives on the Future of Technology

By 2021, three of the five highest performing computers in the world will be equipped with graphics processing units (GPUs), which will enable parallel processing at speeds not possible with systems built with general-purpose processors (CPUs) only. This opinion was expressed by David Kirk, NVIDIA Lead Specialist.

Speaking about the future of technology, Kirk highlighted the benefits of parallel computing with GPUs in applications such as oil and gas exploration, financial modeling, and other simulation-intensive tasks. Since GPUs are more focused on parallel processing due to the nature of graphics constructions, they have a natural superiority in this area over general-purpose multi-core processors.

NVIDIA is already taking practical steps along the way. As you know, she proposed a software tool called CUDA (Compute Unified Device Architecture) that allows developers to implement algorithms in the form of programs designed for GPUs. Currently, CUDA capabilities are available on GeForce desktops, Quadro workstations, and high-end Tesla products. More recently, a corresponding SDK has been released for Mac OS.

It’s not just supercomputers that will unleash the GPU’s potential, Kirk says. An NVIDIA spokesperson highlighted the work of companies such as Evolved Machines that are modeling organic neurons – GPU performance in this area will lead to scent and image computational modules.
