How ATI Radeon HD 3870 X2 Provides High-Speed PCI Express Exchange?
A high-performance graphics accelerator, which certainly is the dual-processor ATI Radeon HD 3870 X2, introduced last month by AMD, exchanges a large amount of data with the system, therefore it places high demands on the interface bandwidth.
This problem was solved thanks to the efforts of engineers from PLX Technology, which specializes in the development of PCI Express (PCIe) switches and bridges. They designed the PEX 8547 PCIe switch, which plays the role of a high-performance splitter in the graphics accelerator circuit.
PLX ExpressLane PEX 8547 Switch is designed specifically for applications such as the ATI Radeon HD 3870 X2. Its features are 48 transmission lines, which are combined into three ports with extremely low latency (110 ns), supporting peer-to-peer transmission; large packet memory (from 256 to 1024 bytes); non-blocking architecture that allows you to maintain the maximum baud rate on all ports at the same time.
