Vista-Able Systems Got “Capable” at Intel’s Insistence
There are already a couple of lawsuits pending in North American courts against PC makers and Microsoft, claiming they were tricked into selling a Vista Capable PC (capable of running Vista). In fact, their newly acquired PCs were able to fully exploit the capabilities of only Vista Home Basic, a version devoid of the graphical interface Aero and a number of other features.
A number of emails from internal Microsoft correspondence that have become public knowledge add fuel to the fire. As it turned out, Intel’s insistence played a decisive role in deciding which systems to classify as Vista Capable.
It is in order to support sales of systems built on the basis of the Intel 915 system logic set, which was already outdated at the time Vista was released a year ago, that Microsoft decided to reduce the requirements, writes a high-ranking official of Microsoft, John Kalkman in one of his letters. Then he adds that it was a mistake of his company to be led by Intel.
Interestingly, there is another post by Mike Nash, Vice President of Microsoft Windows Product Family Management. He himself managed to buy a Sony TX770P laptop built on the aforementioned Intel 915 chipset and get, according to him, a typewriter for $ 2,100. The main factor that prompted Nash to buy was the notorious Vista Capable logo.
Fortunately, in our country, such marking of OEM products is much less common, and readers of our resource, as a rule, are themselves able to understand whether or not the functions they need will work on this configuration. Microsoft, and, perhaps, Intel should prepare for another defense of their interests in the courts.
