Atheros ROCm AR6002 – Very Low Power Wi-Fi Chip for Mobile Devices

Atheros Communications appears to have achieved notable success with a one-box solution to add Wi-Fi connectivity to mobile devices. We are talking about the Atheros ROCm AR6002 family of chips, which are characterized by extremely low power consumption.

According to the manufacturer, the power consumption of the AR6002 in standby mode is reduced to a value that is characterized as “near zero”, and in active mode it is 70% lower than that of existing solutions. Needless to say, energy efficiency is essential for battery-powered devices. New Atheros chips are expected to act as a catalyst for further penetration of Wi-Fi into handheld and mobile devices.

As an example illustrating the properties of a new product, the manufacturer gives the following calculation: while working in a VoIP application, the AR6002 will take 100 hours to use up the charge of a regular cell phone battery (3.7 V, 800 mAh). Another example: one charge of the specified AR6002 battery is enough to download 200 GB of data.

Nearly no standby power consumption frees users from having to turn off Wi-Fi when not in use.

Declared support for Microsoft Windows Embedded CE, Windows Mobile and Linux, sharing with Bluetooth, support for WPA, WPA2, 802.11i, Wi-Fi Protected Set-Up, 802.11e and WMM.

Atheros AR6002 available in one (2.4 GHz) and dual (2.4 / 5 GHz) bands in CSP and BGA packages. Trial samples are currently available. The manufacturer promises to start serial deliveries in the first quarter of 2021. Among the devices in which the new microcircuit can find application are smartphones, personal players, cameras, portable game consoles.
