Broadcom releases first 802.11n in one chip

Broadcom Introduces First 802.11n, implemented in a single chip, called the Intensi-fi BCM4322. For the manufacture of the novelty, a 65-nm technical process is used, which, according to the company, will simultaneously reduce power consumption and the size of the chip. The BCM4322 includes circuits that implement media access control (MAC) functionality, codec, power amplifiers and RF units.

Previous solutions for 802.11n included two chips that were manufactured at 130 and 180 nm, so the BCM4322 marks a significant advance.

Reducing the number of chips will allow designers to reduce the size of printed circuit boards and simplify their topology, which is important because 802.11n is often embedded in compact devices – laptops, USB adapters, expansion cards.

However, it’s not just about size. According to the company, the new chip consumes half the power and costs 40% less than its predecessors.

This is expected to expand the scope of 802.11n by incorporating devices from the home entertainment electronics category – using 802.11n they implement the transmission of multimedia streams. Taking into account the high throughput – 200 Mbps – such application of the technology looks very promising: for example, the full-length film “Pirates of the Caribbean” in high definition over the 802.11n can be transmitted in three and a half minutes. For comparison, to solve the same problem using 802.11g will take 47 minutes.

Preview samples of the BCM4322 are currently available. Serial deliveries should begin in the first quarter of 2021.
