NI Designs First PCI Express VXI-MXI-Express Controller
National Instruments (NI) pays great attention to measuring instruments and other equipment designed for connection to a PC. We recently talked about handheld USB instruments and last fall added the industry’s first PXI Express timing controller to our portfolio.
This time, we will talk about a rather specific, but interesting novelty – the industry’s first VXI-MXI-Express controller, which implements a cable connection of a high-speed VXI interface to a PCI Express bus (Cabled PCI Express) with low latency. The use of a cable connection to PCI Express has a positive effect on the size: the VXI-MXI-Express cable is more compact than the VXI-MXI-2 cable, but is not inferior to it in terms of bandwidth and other indicators. What’s more, using the NI VXI-8360T VXI-MXI-Express Remote Controller, engineers can use a versatile desktop or laptop to control the VXI chassis over a thin, flexible cable up to 7m in length. By the way, this opens up another opportunity: while maintaining the same interface (VXI), you can increase the system’s capabilities by replacing or upgrading a PC.
The VXI-8360T VXI-MXI-Express controller allegedly delivers up to 29 MB / s throughput. The controller is software compatible with other NI products, eliminating the need for control software upgrades (supported tools include NI LabVIEW, LabWindows / CVI, and Measurement Studio for Microsoft Visual Studio). As a reminder, Cabled PCI Express connectivity is also used for external RAID arrays and remote management of PXI systems. The new product is available in several versions shown in the photo (from left to right: NI VXI-PCIe-8361T, NI VXI-PCIe-8362T, NI VXI-ExpressCard8360T).
