There will be no winner in the optical format war
Events in recent weeks may give the impression that Sony has won the battle against Toshiba: Blu-ray, not HD DVD, will take the place of DVD.
Five of the eight largest Hollywood studios with 70% of the home video market have already opted for Blu-ray. In response, Toshiba has lowered the price of its HD DVD players – according to the source, the entry-level model can be purchased for less than $ 100.
The motivation of the studios to promote the new format is clear. DVD sales crash – $ 45 billion in industry-wide revenue. Doll. in the past year alone has halved. Studios’ hopes for a business revival are in Blu-ray.
But the arrival of a new format will not bring the situation back overnight. Now Blu-ray and HD DVD together occupy only a tiny segment of the market in relation to DVD. The victory of one of the formats would open the floodgates for the streams of advertising money aimed at promoting the new medium.
Some observers believe that the critical point has been passed and Toshiba has no choice but to go into the shadows. But there are reasons that make this not the only scenario.
The main one is that decisive changes are not possible until the next major trading season, which, as we know, falls on Christmas. Much can change over the months.
Now, Blu-ray discs sell more than HD DVDs. However, analysts attribute this to the fact that the PlayStation 3 (PS3) game console provides Blu-ray playback. PS3 owners buy multiple discs, just to assess the capabilities of their technology. But at $ 499, the PS3 cannot claim to be a cheap turntable and is usually bought for other use. Toshiba is ahead of Sony in terms of turntables sold.
According to hardware retailers, buyers are slow to spend money on high definition (HD) players until it’s clear which format will win. At the same time, the demand for HD display devices has grown significantly. The fact is that the means of improving recordings played from a regular DVD, implemented in DVD players and HD TVs, provide a sufficient increase in quality. In other words, the picture on a modern HDTV at 1080p from a conventional DVD is vastly superior to what was seen on a standard definition TV a few years ago, and not much different from that provided by Blu-ray or HD DVD. The incentive to buy a new turntable and discs disappears.
In this situation, according to the source, the following may happen. The longer the majority of consumers are satisfied with the “improved DVD”, the more chances for a new technology to emerge that can overshadow both Blu-ray and HD DVD.
The first candidates for the role of “killer of optical discs” are already visible. These are media based on flash memory, the capacity of which is growing rapidly, and the price is also falling rapidly. Some experts believe that in the coming years there will be USB drives on the market that will be comparable in volume and price to Blu-ray discs. At the same time, they outright outperform drives in portability, reliability and versatility. An alternative option could be the arrival of fiber-optic networks at home, which will seriously compete with the traditional scheme of distributing video recordings on removable media.
In other words, even the winner in the Blu-ray vs HD DVD battle will be only a temporary, transitional solution and will very soon follow VHS. The new discs can provide only slightly better quality than the “enhanced” DVDs and cannot compete with the capabilities of fiber-optic high-definition video on demand. However, neither one nor the other comes close to “full immersion”, for which, according to a rough estimate, based on the resolution of the human eye (more than 500 dpi), a 60-inch screen with a resolution of 26000 x 14500 pixels is required. Meanwhile, Japanese specialists have already taken the first step in this direction.
