Microchip Technology adds USB On-The-Go support to PIC32 microcontrollers
Microchip Technology, a microcontroller and analog semiconductor company, announces the addition of USB 2 functionality.0 On-The-Go (OTG) in 32-bit PIC32 microcontrollers. It is alleged that this will help electronic device developers equip their designs with USB OTG support at a minimum cost. The new PIC32 models offer high performance (the maximum clock speed of the PIC32 family is now 80 MHz) and increased on-board memory, while maintaining pinout, peripheral, and code compatibility with the Microchip 16-bit microcontroller families.
Recall that when connected via the USB interface, one side plays the role of a host – for example, a PC always acts in this capacity, and the other – the role of a client or device, goes to USB drives, peripherals, cameras. Products with OTG support can, within certain limits, play both roles – about which of them will be the host and who will be the client, two devices with USB OTG functionality “negotiate” with each other at the initial stage of connection. New PIC32 microcontrollers with USB OTG support allow designers to implement all three modes in electronic devices. In addition, the microcontrollers are configured with a physical layer interface (USB OTG PHY), which reduces the number of external components, the size of the printed circuit board and the cost of the final product.
Examples of PIC32 applications include industrial electronics (security systems, electricity meters, card and barcode readers); medical devices (condition monitors, dispensers, pressure meters); automotive electronics (radio systems, tachometers, metering devices); communication facilities (power grid communication cards, network controllers); household appliances (coffee makers, washing machines, exercise equipment, dishwashers); and consumer electronics (GPS modules, home automation, MP3 players).
Four new models of the PIC32 family with USB OTG support have flash memory from 128KB to 512KB. They are available in TQFP housings with 64 or 100 contacts. While preview samples are available, mass production will begin in the second quarter.
