Toshiba may surrender to Blu-ray in coming weeks, sources say
Resource Home Media Magazine, citing reliable sources, writes that in the coming weeks we can witness Toshiba throwing a white flag in the format war.
The move is predictable, especially considering the January sales results. After Warner’s decision to publish its films only on Blu-ray discs, compatible equipment sales were 93% in a week, while HD DVD players were only able to reach 7%.
After Toshiba drastically reduced the prices of its equipment, the situation changed insignificantly and Blu-ray held at least 2/3 of the market.
Sales of content on discs were even worse for HD DVD. For the week ending February 10, the ratio was 81% to 19%, of course in favor of Blu-ray.
As a result, every player or drive sold to Toshiba now brings it only losses, in some cases measured in hundreds of dollars, especially when you consider the huge advertising costs, including videos during the most rated program in America, the American Football Championship final, the Super Bowl.
How exactly the statement prepared by Toshiba will look like it is still difficult to say. Maybe the company will just release their Blu-ray player?
