Akros Announces is the first to release a controller that supports the yet to be adopted IEEE 802 standard.3at PoE
IEEE 802 standard.3at, which defines the features of powering devices from Ethernet lines, while it exists in the form of a draft (Draft 2.0). This does not prevent manufacturers from developing the element base necessary for the manufacture of the corresponding equipment. This situation is not something out of the ordinary – it is enough to recall the state of affairs in wireless networks, where the draft version of the 802.11n draft 2.0 has been used as a standard for quite some time: the Wi-Fi Alliance announced the beginning of certification of the corresponding devices almost a year ago, and manufacturers are releasing devices that already support 802.11n and future upgrades.
Akros Silicon, a mixed signal processing chip for Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) solutions, today announced the industry’s first network-powered device controller, the Powered Device (PD) Controller, which implements the functionality 2-Event Physical Layer Classification. This functionality should be part of the new PoE specifications. It will increase the maximum PD input power up to 30W (in the existing 802.3af this value is limited to 13 W).
What gives an increase in power? The prospect of new PoE applications is opening up, including network-powered security cameras that can execute pan and zoom commands; 802 wireless hotspots.11n; client-side WiMax equipment; Ethernet switches for small networks; thin clients and LCDs.
The aforementioned 2-Event Classification functionality enables the device to recognize which Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE) it is connected to: Type 1 (802.3af / 13W) or Type 2 (802.3at / 30W).
