Micron launches 2MP image sensor with 2.8×2.1mm active area
The single-chip system, presented recently by Micron Technology, is designed for integration into cell phones, PDAs and web cameras. It includes a 1/5-inch image sensor with a resolution of 1200×1600 pixels (2 megapixels) and all auxiliary circuits. The pixel size of the new item, designated MT9D113 (the illustration shows the MT9D112 sensor of the same resolution), is 1.75 microns, like other products in the line covering resolutions from 1.3 to 8 megapixels.
A feature of the product is the use of DigitalClarity technology, which increases the photosensitivity of the sensor. Another advantage of MT9D113 is the high speed of information reading, which provides video recording at a frequency of up to 15 frames per second at full resolution and 30 frames per second – when reduced to 800×600 pixels. The miniature dimensions of the sensor make it possible to create on its basis a chamber module with dimensions of 6.5 x 6.5 mm. Such a device can be used as a replacement for VGA and 1.3 megapixel modules without significant design changes.
Among other distinguishing features of MT9D113, the company calls the presence of one-time programmable memory (OTP), serial (MIPI) and parallel interfaces. The presence of OTP provides additional flexibility in production (for example, it allows you to calibrate cameras for the parameters of the optical system). Serial interface helps to reduce the number of transmission lines, simplifying board layouts, reducing development time and cost.
Samples of MT9D113 are currently available. The company plans to start serial production in March.
