Intel and STMicroelectronics specialists managed to achieve an important milestone in the creation of a new type of memory, built on a change in the phase state of matter (Phase Change Memory, PCM). Companies announced the start of deliveries of prototypes of the new memory. Prototypes are silicon chips designed to introduce new technology to potential consumers.
The memory device, codenamed Alverstone, is said to have very fast read and write speeds, uses less power than conventional flash memory, and offers bit-level manipulation. Memory of the PCM type has long been a subject of discussion, and its creation is the point of application of research efforts. The release of Alverstone was the first step in the commercialization of the development. Intel and STMicroelectronics talked about how the new memory was created at the International Solid States Circuits Conference (ISSCC).
