Analysts believe that only three major hard drive manufacturers will remain in the world
Japanese experts analyzed the trends prevailing in the market of hard disk drives and came to the conclusion that the industry is currently experiencing a kind of “golden age” corresponding to a period when existing technologies exceed the needs of users.
In the first half of the nineties, consumers were ready to overpay to get more disk space. To meet demand, hard drive manufacturers rushed into the race for gigabytes, and quite quickly were able to increase the recording density so much that in the second half of the decade, PCs began to be equipped with gigabyte drives. Then buyers turned their attention to price, which caused a price collapse.
The turning point was the beginning of the new millennium, analysts believe. The use of hard drives for storing video recordings again required an increase in volumes and increased demand. This made it possible to stabilize prices. In addition to supplies for PCs, new markets opened up – hard drives began to settle in household appliances. Global shipments have grown by over 10% per year for several years. For example, in 2021 it was 14.8% and exceeded 434 million. devices, and this year is expected to exceed 491 million.
Among the important factors of growth, experts say the release of a new generation of game consoles, an increase in demand for laptops and the proliferation of household appliances with built-in hard drives (primarily, recorders and portable players). Interestingly, according to experts, solid-state drives, which are gaining popularity recently, will not be able to become a full-fledged replacement for hard drives.
Of course, the “golden age” will end someday and the first prerequisites for this are already visible. According to analysts, the terabyte volume already achieved by the technology for household applications (recorders) is quite enough, and buyers, at this stage, do not see the need to purchase more.
Manufacturers will have to adapt to changing gaming conditions when the industry’s main growth factor – the demand for hard drives for video recording – ceases to play a role. The race to density and dominance in mass production will slow down, and the center of gravity will shift to the ability to extend product life cycles, reduce costs and increase product yields.
By that time, the struggle for market shares between the six major players, which is taking place today, will end. Their number will be reduced to three, and in a market that has taken on an established character, each participant will be able to calmly evolve in the niche allotted to him.
The names of the three lucky ones have not been named, but we dare to assume that they will be today’s favorites – Seagate, Western Digital and Hitachi.
