Date of release of Intel X38 chipset and its “overclocked” version, X48
Referring, as usual, in such cases to motherboard manufacturers, the source says that Intel will officially begin shipping X38 chipsets in mid-September. This will allow to start mass production of boards based on them by the end of this month.
X38 premiere date set in view of upcoming rival AMD RD790 launch date. Recall, according to the latest information, the RD790 will debut in November.
In addition to FSB 1333 MHz support, DDR3-1333 memory, PCI Express 2 bus.0 (PCIe) and two PCIe x16 slots, the X38 chipset will have another feature – it will be the first chipset to use the integrated heat spreader (IHS) technology commonly used in processors.
Before shipping X38 yet, Intel is already planning to release an upgraded version of this chipset, X48. According to the source, this will happen at the end of the year, and the first X48-based motherboards may go on sale in the first quarter of 2021.
Functionally, the X48 will be equivalent to the X38, but it will have support for 1600 MHz FSB and DDR3-1600, according to motherboard manufacturers. Since the pinout and pinout of the chip will remain the same, manufacturers will be able to use the same boards for the X38 and X48. Moreover, according to the source, the X38 can be overclocked to FSB 1600 MHz and DDR3-1600.
Intel Expected to Make Final X48 Decision Based on Market Response to X38-Based Motherboards.
