Texas Memory Systems RamSan-500 – “World’s Fastest Flash SSD”
Texas Memory Systems, which owns the World’s Fastest Storage trademark, has announced the RamSan-500. According to the manufacturer, the novelty is indeed the world’s fastest solid-state drive (SSD) based on flash memory. Although? in this case, it is more correct to talk not about a drive, but about storage based on an SSD array.
A feature of the RamSan-500 is the use of a caching scheme (random access memory DDR – from 16 to 64 GB acts as a cache memory), which provides a very high read speed. Comparing the RamSan-500 to a RAID system of comparable size based on hard drives, the SSD delivers 16x the performance advantage while consuming 50% less power.
One of the main motivations for deploying SSD-based solutions is the need to accelerate software applications that run on Microsoft SQL Server or Oracle database servers. The use of SSD allows you to effectively overcome the bottlenecks of such applications associated with performance degradation with an increase in the number of users and concurrent transactions. It is important that, according to Texas Memory Systems, using SSDs turns out to be a more economical way out of a tense situation than upgrading servers, increasing RAM and RAID arrays.
RamSan-500 is available in two configurations – 1 TB or 2 TB. The claimed performance is characterized by the following values: 100,000 input-output operations per second (IOPS) in steady state read mode; 10,000 steady state write IOPS throughput in steady modes – 2 Gb / s. At the same time, the device consumes 250 W. External connectivity provides two to eight Fiber Channel (4 Gb / s) ports.
Now the company accepts orders for RamSan-500 from existing customers. The devices will be available to the general public in the fourth quarter.
