Sun Launches “World’s Smallest” 4×4 Server

Sun Microsystems launches its first family of servers based on Quad-Core Intel Xeon processors (x86-compatible, 64-bit). Among the new products – according to Sun, the world’s smallest server with four processor sockets, supporting these processors.

Sun Fire X4450 and Sun Fire X4150 servers, according to the manufacturer, are characterized by high performance, packing density and energy efficiency. Both servers can run Solaris, Windows, Linux or VMware.

According to Sun Microsystems, the Sun Fire X4450 (top photo), based on a Quad-Core Intel Xeon 7300, is the first and so far the only 2U system with four processor sockets and is designed for quad-core processors. This server is twice the performance and memory of the competition with 50% less power consumption.

Sun Fire X4150 server (bottom image), which uses Quad-Core Intel Xeon 5300 processors, has two processor sockets and is 1U. Like the older model, it is twice as large as its rivals in terms of RAM and performance. In addition, it has an impressive amount of disk storage (over 1 TB) and high-performance network connectivity.

An interesting feature of the Sun Fire X4450 and Sun Fire X4150 was the use of new layout principles in their chassis design, which made it possible to increase the “computational density”, in other words, to fit high-performance systems in a very modest amount of space.

Sun Fire X4150 Servers Available Now. Manufacturer’s quoted price for base configuration in the US is $ 2995. Sun Fire X4450 Servers Coming to Market in October. The base configuration of this model will cost $ 8,895 in the US.
