OKI ML8511: world’s first integrated UV sensor with SOI-CMOS technology
Oki Electric Industry (OKI) Officially Announces Mass Shipment of ML8511 Integrated UV Sensors.
The ML8511 microcircuit, according to the manufacturer, is the world’s first integrated UV sensor for the manufacture of which the SOI-CMOS technology (Silicon-On-Insulator Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) is used. In this technology, instead of a conventional silicon substrate, a substrate with an integrated dielectric layer is used, due to which it is possible to reduce the supply voltage and leakage currents.
The device includes a receiving element and analog output circuits formed on a single crystal. Compared to other solutions, this reduces the number of components, the cost and the size of the devices. An important feature of the ML8511 chip is the presence of a power-saving mode, which helps to extend the battery life of portable electronic devices with battery power.
Concurrently with the IC, OKI begins shipping a reference board that should simplify design development based on the ML8511. The board implements the functions of measuring and displaying the luminous flux density in the ultraviolet range.
In the future, the company plans to master the production of SOI-CMOS sensors with extended functionality.
