Elpida intends to quadruple DRAM cell sizes when moving to 40nm standards
Elpida Memory reportedly plans to reduce the footprint of the memory cell to 4F2 (where F is the linewidth) when moving to 40nm DRAM, which the company is slated for mass production around 2021.
This information was released by Takao Adachi, director and chief engineer of the technology and development department of Elpida Memory, at the ISTF 2021 conference (Industry Strategy and Technology Forum), which took place last week.
The company expects to create a 4F2 cell, which so far has only been possible for NAND flash memory, through the use of a bulk transistor and other tricks.
Now, Elpida is serially producing 70nm products. Reduction of DRAM cell size from current 8F2 to 6F2 is planned for transition to 65nm generation. Prototypes of 65nm chips are ready, serial production at 65nm should begin this fiscal year.
A decrease in cell size to 4F2 is planned for the transition to the 40-nm generation, the third in a row after the 65-nm generation. First, the company plans to master the norms of 50 and 45 nm.
