Ovonyx and Hynix Semiconductor have entered into a long-term licensing agreement under which Hynix Semiconductor will be able to use Ovonyx’s developments in the field of phase-change memory (PCM). Moreover, the agreement stipulates that Ovonyx will actively support Hynix’s PCM product development program.
Ovonyx and its largest shareholder, Energy Conversion Devices, have developed PCM random access memory (PCRAM) technology, including memory devices, materials and manufacturing processes.
Ovonyx PCRAM technology is based on the effect of reversible phase change. High performance and storage density are key features of the new memory. It is marketed as a cost-effective alternative to flash memory and DRAM. In addition, PCRAM is suitable for use as embedded memory for microcontrollers and logic circuits.
In turn, Hynix is known to have rich experience in the production of memory chips. The company plans to commercialize PCRAM developments. In addition, the terms of the agreement open up opportunities for Hynix to create next-generation memory in conjunction with Ovonyx.
