Intel Skulltrail Platform in Action. Coming soon
Intel today withdrew a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) for its high-performance dual-socket Skulltrail platform.
Find reviews on Hot Hardware, PC Perspective, Techgage, Tech Report, Guru3D, and more.
Skulltrail is a combination of workstation and gaming system elements. The key component of the new platform is the Intel D5400XS board, which is the first solution that does not use the NVIDIA chipset and supports SLI technology (we remember the situation with ULi chipsets, but the SLI implementation was not official there).
Intel D5400XS specifications:
- CPU support: Core 2 Extreme and Xeon, LGA771, two processors in one system
- Chipset: Intel 5400 MCH Northbridge, Intel 6321ESB ICH Southbridge
- Bridging Connectivity: PCIe x4 + DMI x4
- Expansion card interfaces: 4 x PCI Express x16 (PCIe 1.1), 2 x PCI
- Memory: up to 4 FB-DIMM-667/800 (up to 16 GB)
- Disk system: 1 x PATA-100, 6 x Serial ATAII with support for RAID 0, 1, 5, 10
- 2 x eSATA on Marvell 88SE6121 controller
- Sound: 8-channel, SigmaTel STAC9274D5, S / PDIF out
- 10 x USB 2.0
- Intel 82573L Gigabit Network Codec
- 2 x FireWire
- Form Factor: EATX (13 “x 12”)
You can familiarize yourself with the results of Skulltrail tests with two Core 2 Extreme QX9775 processors on one of the above sites. We will only summarize the results and impressions.
In multimedia applications, a dual-processor platform outperforms the fastest one-processor platform by 20-60%. In the professional field (POV-Ray, CineBench), the advantage even reaches almost 90%.
In games, everything rests on the graphics subsystem, as a result of which, starting with a resolution of 1280 x 1024, a system with two QX9775s does not have an advantage over an rival QX9770. Let’s just note that Skulltrail is currently the only platform that allows you to use both SLI and CrossFire.
Finally, a few words about availability and pricing. Sources suggest that all Skulltrail components will be available for sale in the current quarter. They certainly won’t be cheap. Each of the two Core 2 Extreme QX9775 processors will retail for about $ 1,200, with more than $ 400 on the motherboard. But this is not much of a pleasure to have the fastest desktop PC possible, isn’t it?:)
