Violin Memory plans to use HyperTransport to connect terabyte RAM
Violin Memory announces technology alliance with AMD. Collaboration should result in memory solutions leveraging HyperTransport technology for servers. The combination of AMD and Violin Memory is said to open up a cost-effective way to grow server memory to terabytes. The features of the solutions should be low power consumption and high reliability.
Under the agreement, developers will be able to use HyperTransport technology for direct communication between Violin 1010 memory subsystems and servers based on AMD Opteron processors. The protocol implemented in HyperTransport is said to allow multiple processors to simultaneously use the shared resources of one or more memory subsystems.
The expansion of the RAM up to a “terabyte size” will be provided by the switched memory technology used in Violin 1010 devices. Recall that one such 2U device is designed for the installation of 84 Violin Memory Modules (VIMM). Each module has a capacity of 6 GB, which corresponds to a total volume of 504 GB.
Interestingly, Peter Geiger, formerly at Newisys and IBM, will lead the development of HyperTransport connectivity. The appearance of finished products is expected in the second half of 2021.
