AMD is postponing release of some CPUs to release 65-watt Phenom this quarter
Following the launch of the first Phenom processors, AMD has promised that faster models will arrive in the first quarter of 2021.
Now the plans have been adjusted, which was confirmed by the News resource.com manufacturer’s official representative. Quad-core Phenom 9700 (2.4GHz) and Phenom 9900 (2.6GHz) are now on the Q2 processor schedule. Also, the release dates for models operating at 2.8 and 3 GHz have been shifted to a later time. The reason for the transfer is the company’s reluctance to release new CPUs on B2 stepping, which contains a memory controller error, the elimination of which by software entails a noticeable decrease in performance.
Things are much better with energy efficient models. AMD will focus on them in the first quarter. So far we know that by the end of March we will have the announcement of at least one such model, Phenom 9100E, whose TDP will be 65 W. Recall that the first Phenom models 9500 and 9600 have 95 watts. The estimated frequency at which the Phenom 9100E will operate will be 1.8 GHz.
In addition, Phenom X3 (Toliman) triple-core processors are confirmed to be released in Q1. They will be produced on B2 core stepping.
Analysts predict that the 45nm process will be delayed from the end of this year until next.
The basis for such predictions is the fact that the conversion of Fab 30 (65 and 90 nm) into Fab 38 has just begun, and AMD does not yet have engineering samples of a 45 nm CPU codenamed Shanghai.
