As you know, today AMD introduced its new product – Quad-Core AMD Opteron processor, formerly known under the code name Barcelona.
Among the features of the novelty, the manufacturer notes the most energy efficient x86-compatible architecture, flavored with a number of innovative solutions in the field of energy saving, including:
- AMD CoolCore Technology, which reduces power consumption by turning off unused parts of the processor;
- Independent Dynamic Core Technology, an enhanced version of AMD PowerNow technology!, which allows each core to change its clock speeds depending on the specific performance requirements of the application;
- Dual Dynamic Power Management (DDPM) technology that provides independent power to the cores and memory controller, which allows the cores and controller to operate at different supply voltages, depending on the specific application. DDPM is a feature of most Quad-Core AMD Opteron based platforms introduced today.
The second key benefit of the new processors is improved support for virtualization. Data centers rely on virtualization as an indispensable tool for consolidating resources and workload, increasing reliability and security. The Direct Connect Architecture improves virtualization support for Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors, as an integrated memory controller helps reduce memory latency, and Rapid Virtualization Indexing, part of AMD Virtualization technology, to reduce virtualization software overhead. Previously, the functionality implemented by Rapid Virtualization Indexing was performed by means of software. Transferring them to the hardware part of the platform made it possible to radically increase the speed of work.
In terms of performance, the Quad-Core AMD Opteron outperforms competitors in the same thermal package, with better results in industry recognized benchmarks: SPECfp_rate2021, SPECint_2021, SPECompM2021Base, STREAM, Fluent and LS-DYNA. Simultaneously with the release of the processor, a new indicator was announced that reflects its power consumption. The indicator was called Average CPU Power (ACP), which can be translated as “average processor power”.
ACP provides an indication of the total power consumption of the processor, including cores, onboard memory controller and HyperTransport lines, under load consistent with a typical set of commercial applications. According to the company, ACP provides a more accurate estimate of processor power consumption. In particular, relying on the ACP, operators of data centers will be able to calculate their “energy budget”. At the same time, AMD will continue to specify TDP (thermal design power) values in processor specifications.
Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors introduced today have 55W and 75W ACPs.
A total of nine Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors appear in the AMD range. Five of them can be used in configurations with one or two processors (2000 series), three of them are low power (HE) models. Four processors, two of which are energy efficient, for configurations with up to eight processors (8000 series).
All models have the same amount of cache memory: L1 – 64/64 KB (commands / data), L2 – 512 KB per core, L3 – 2 MB. Processors support SSE, SSE2, SSE3, SSE4 instruction set extensions. The onboard memory controller has a 128-bit data bus, supports ECC and Advanced ECC, and is designed to work with DDR2-667 buffered memory. The maximum number of DDR2 modules is eight (in this case, the maximum frequency is limited to 533 MHz).
