Americans are seriously looking for a technology that will replace CMOS

Figuratively speaking, semiconductor technologies in their present form are living out their last days. Providing the development of computers for three decades, CMOS is coming close to the physical limit of applicability. This is the conclusion reached by researchers looking for a solution that can bring the industry to a new stage of development. There is no consensus about what it will be, but the rate is definitely made on nanotechnology.

According to experts, manufacturers, universities and government agencies should move towards new technology together. An example of cooperation, the source calls the work of Semiconductor Research Corp. (SRC) and the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Research in the field of nanoelectronics was chosen as the direction of work, and the specific goal is to develop a technology that can replace CMOS. In the next 5-10 years, NIST and SRC scientists intend to demonstrate the practical possibility of producing new generation integrated circuits. Over five years, this development will cost 18.5 million. Doll.

Projects in various companies and research institutions are coordinated by the Nanoelectronics Research Initiative (NRI). NRI’s primary goal is to develop electronic components by 2021 that can replace CMOS field-effect transistors in semiconductor microcircuits.

Within the framework of the NRI program, three main research centers have been created – Western Institute of Nanoelectronics (WIN); Institute for Nanoelectronic Discovery and Exploration (Index) and Southwest Academy for Nanoelectronics (SWAN), which include six of the largest companies in the industry: AMD, Freescale Semiconductor, IBM, Intel, Micron Technology and Texas Instruments.
