Kaspersky Lab: first spam mailing with MP3 files detected

Kaspersky Lab informs about the detection of the first spam mailing that uses audio files in MP3 format to deliver the main advertising message to the final audience. The first examples of such mailings were recorded by spam analysts in European mail traffic.

The MP3 spam registered by the experts of the company belongs to the category of so-called stock spam – spam messages, the purpose of which is to advertise and increase the stock price of certain companies. This category of unsolicited mailings first appeared in August last year and since then has confidently ranked first in the number of innovative delivery methods used by cybercriminals to bypass anti-spam filters and other means of protection against unwanted messages. So, it was the distributors of stock spam who were the first to send unsolicited messages in specially noisy graphic files and in pdf documents, which at that time were not yet recognized by anti-spam filters.

Sending audio recordings in MP3 format is the next round in the fight against spammers and anti-spam developers. Emails registered by Kaspersky Lab do not contain any text, but they contain an attached MP3 file with a duration of 25 to 33 seconds. Opening it, the user will hear a female voice distorted by the sound filter, offering to buy shares of a certain company called Exit Only Inc. It is obvious that the spammers who have taken possession of the shares of this company are trying to raise its capitalization in this way in order to subsequently profitably sell these shares at an increased price.

It is likely that this mailing list is a kind of touchstone for spammers, and it cannot be called successful due to some technical limitations. Due to the need to make spam messages as compact as possible, attackers were forced to use audio recordings of very low quality, so it is very difficult for listeners to make out the text of the message, even at the highest volume. In addition, to bypass anti-spam filters, senders slightly modify the entry in each message, which makes it even worse for perception.

Kaspersky Lab experts note that predictions about the imminent appearance of MP3 spam have been sounded for a long time, however, in their opinion, its development and further distribution will be severely limited by the aforementioned technical limitations and the need to find a compromise between the quality of recording and the volume of letters. Considering that most users will not even try to parse a spam MP3-record of poor quality, the effectiveness and feasibility of such mailing seems to be questionable.

“Users quite often send each other short sound files with jokes and are accustomed to the fact that such files are worth listening to. It looks like this is what spammers are counting on – when they see an MP3 file, recipients will listen to them, assuming it’s something interesting. But spammers are very limited in the size of the audio message and, therefore, the sound quality in the spam recording is very poor. I think that MP3 spam mailings will sometimes be repeated, but these mailings will not have much effect on spam statistics, “says Andrey Nikishin, Director of IT Security Outsourcing at Kaspersky Lab.
