NVIDIA is preparing new technology for extreme speed
As it has been known for a long time, with the release of motherboards based on the 790FX chipset, AMD is also preparing to introduce a new graphics technology Quad CrossFire, which consists in using four video cards in one system at once. Such solutions do not even account for one percent of the ready-made PC market, but they allow the manufacturer to declare that the system that uses precisely its components has achieved the highest results in popular tests.
NVIDIA, of course, does not want to put up with this state of affairs and is preparing a counterargument – 3-way SLI technology, which allows using three graphics accelerators in one system. Recall,
theoretically, such an opportunity appeared almost a year ago, when the nForce 680i SLI system logic set was released, but then it was assumed that one of the cards would deal with physics calculations. After a year, physical calculations on the GPU have not advanced a single step in their development, and now the third PCI Express x16 slot on such motherboards will find another use.
Mainboards based on nForce 680i SLI, as well as yet unannounced 780a / 780i SLI, will be able to work with three GeForce 8800 Ultra or GeForce 8800 GTX video cards, each of which has two SLI connectors. The release of new drivers with support for 3-way SLI is scheduled for November 12.
The connection diagram can be seen below:
Well, let’s face it, the CrossFire X technology, which will allow combining up to four accelerators in the system, while it looks closer to the user, however, who cares when it comes to extreme performance??
