Fujitsu and Fujitsu Laboratories develop LSI for robot vision
According to the source, a large integrated circuit (LSI), created by specialists from Fujitsu and Fujitsu Laboratories, will allow robots to recognize the shapes and movements of objects in real time.
Similar to how a person perceives an image with two eyes, the chip processes a pair of images coming from cameras (the top images are from the left and right cameras, respectively), and determines the spatial relationships between objects based on the parallax effect (points corresponding to differences in the contours of objects shown in the third picture). Given its small size and low power consumption, the microcircuit can be used in relatively compact robots, the developers say.
To speed up the processing, it was assigned to 256 computational circuits working in parallel. In addition, a special scheme analyzes color gradations to highlight the outlines of objects. LSI manages to extract about 2000 faces, corners and other dividing lines from each scene at a rate of 30 frames per second. Comparison of selected contours in adjacent frames allows you to determine the displacement of objects. Additional features include more accurate frame comparison, zoom analysis, frame scaling and rotation of comparison samples that look different depending on distance and angle of view. The power consumption of the microcircuit is approximately 2.7 W at a clock frequency of 200 MHz.
The development is part of the Japanese government robotics program, known as the “21st Century Robot Challenge Program”.
