Scientists want to instruct viruses to make nanomaterials

A team of researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) announced the development of a new method of making nanomaterials using viruses as microscopic building blocks.

Viruses harmless to humans have become a building material from which scientists have learned to form the thinnest white fiber. Fiber is comparable in strength to nylon, and glows bright red in ultraviolet rays.

The fiber itself is not yet of practical interest, but researchers hope to use it to form materials that include inorganic particles. They could find use in battery electrodes, transistors, and solar cells.

In particular, the new technology is said to make it possible to make flexible, thread-like batteries that can be woven into fabric. By the way, this idea has already been seized upon by the American military, who, as you know, are in search of a reliable and capacious power source for the electronics that modern soldiers are equipped with, from radio communications to navigation and night vision devices.

Among the promising applications of “viral technology” also named solar cells and sensors of chemical compounds, integrated into the uniform.
