Kodak claims 75% of professional photographers are faithful to film

Three quarters of surveyed photographers intend to continue to use photographic film, even after becoming familiar with digital technology. This is one of the results of a study by Kodak. More than 9000 professional photographers from the USA took part in the survey.

According to the organizers of the survey, its results reflect the solidity of traditional technology and echoes the results of a similar study conducted recently in Europe, where more than two-thirds of professional photographers said they did not plan to give up film.

According to Kodak, 68% of professional American photographers believe that shooting with film, under certain conditions, is better than digital photography. What exactly professionals value in film can be seen from the following list (in parentheses – the percentage of respondents who gave the appropriate answer):

  • Film conveys more information in medium and large formats (48%);
  • Film gives pictures a more traditional photographic look (48%);
  • Film captures details better in the darkest and lightest parts of the frame (45%);
  • The film has a longer exposure interval, latitude (42%);
  • Film is more convenient for archival storage (38%).

Many survey respondents particularly noted the benefits of black and white film. While professional photographers recognize some of the benefits of digital cameras, they note that film does a much better job of capturing reality in black and white. Approximately 90% of respondents use black and white photography as a tool of creative self-expression, and 57% of them take black and white photographs with film cameras.

When analyzing the survey data, do not forget that Kodak is a major supplier of photographic film. It is possible that professionals are in no hurry to give up photographic film, but for every black and white picture taken with a film camera, there are several thousand pictures taken by the same professionals using digital cameras.
