Japanese specialists received laser radiation from an “artificial atom”
RIKEN, NEC and JST (Japan Science and Technology Agency) have successfully demonstrated laser radiation from a single artificial atom, obtained by combining superconducting quantum bits (qubits, superconducting qubits) with a resonator. The lasting effect was achieved with a very simple system – one “atom” and a resonator – and became the world’s first example of using a superconducting qubit as a photon generator.
Laser radiation provides access to several properties of the superconducting qubit, which is the basic circuit of a quantum computer. For example, a qubit can be used as a conductor in a resonator, or to control circuit parameters by changing the gate potential or to represent a logical value.
Scientists applied a nano-ampere current to a superconducting qubit and made the resonator emit a photon every 0.5 ns, resulting in laser radiation at a frequency of about 10 GHz (microwaves). The energy of microwaves supplied to the system from an external source increased almost threefold.
The created emitting system is said to be a contribution to both fundamental and applied research on lasers. In particular, during the development of a system for converting information presented in electronic form into microwaves, there is a need for a compact microwave source.
