Compatibility of current motherboards with Phenom processors: so far things are disappointing

Our colleagues from Tom`s Hardware decided to find out how things are with support for AMD Phenom processors in motherboards currently sold on various chipsets.

The test subjects were Phenom 9600 (revision B2, 2.3 GHz, 4 x 512 KB L2 cache, 2 MB L3 cache) and the following boards:

  • ASUS Crosshair (NVIDIA nForce 590 SLI)
  • ASUS M2A-VM HDMI (AMD 690G)
  • Biostar TForce 590 SLI Deluxe (NVIDIA nForce 590 SLI)
  • Epox MF570 SLI (NVIDIA nForce 570 SLI)
  • Foxconn C51XEM2AA (NVIDIA nForce 590 SLI)
  • Foxconn / Winfast K8M890M2MA-RS2H (VIA K8M890)
  • Gigabyte GA-M57SLI-S4 (NVIDIA nForce 570 SLI)
  • Gigabyte GA-M59SLI-S5 (NVIDIA nForce 590 SLI)
  • MSI K9A Platinum (ATI Crossfire Xpress 3200)
  • MSI K9NU Neo-V (ULi / Nvidia M1697)

The AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600 processor worked without any problems on all the above motherboards+. With a 4-core AMD CPU, the situation was far from so happy.

With the latest BIOS update, the Phenom 9600 was supported only by both ASUS motherboards. Gigabyte GA-M57SLI-S4 support for new AMD processors was also announced, but in fact it was not possible to start the system.

Thus, AMD fans clearly have one more reason not to rush to the transition to Phenom: in addition to the fact that it is desirable to wait for the release of revision B3, we would also like the motherboard manufacturers to make appropriate changes to their BIOS. So far, only one manufacturer out of six has done this.
