Working with ZFS in Leopard will be implemented through the command line
In an interview with Singapore-based Computerworld, Apple spokesman Anuj Nayar confirmed that Mac OS X Leopard will have limited support for the ZFS file system. According to Nayar, working with ZFS will be implemented exclusively through the command line and only in read-only mode.
Apple is considering ZFS as a potential storage system, but in Leopard this file system will be read-only, and, moreover, it will not become the main one – in this role, the new version of Mac OS X will continue to use HFS+.
However, the Apple Insider website quotes testers who have received a preliminary version of the ZFS support from Apple, who say that the company appears to be planning to expand support for the new file system in the future. They are confident that Apple will indeed make ZFS the successor to HFS in the future+.
ZFS is a 128-bit file system developed by Sun that allows you to serve volumes of virtually unlimited size and increase productivity by using an object model instead of I / O mechanisms. In addition, according to the developers, data integrity is never lost in ZFS – every block will remain intact even after thousands of failures.
