DisplayPort has room for USB

DisplayPort, which replaces VGA and DVI, can also transfer USB data. DisplayPort roadmap recently shared by VESA.

Current DisplayPort 1 Specification.1 includes an additional channel used to exchange data between a computer and a monitor. It is, for example, used to wake up the monitor from sleep mode when the computer is turned on.

Bruce Montag, head of the VESA DisplayPort Task Group, said his team is working to expand the bandwidth of this channel to add the ability to exchange USB traffic over it. Montag did not say how much bandwidth would be available for USB, but noted that the goal is 480 Mbps (USB 2.0).

In addition, the Task Group is developing a miniature connector that will allow external monitors to be connected to mobile devices such as UMPC or MID (Mobile Internet Device).

Another area of work is to create a solution that allows you to connect multiple monitors using one connector.
