Toshiba joins IBM in 32nm chip development

According to the source, Toshiba Corporation intends to join the group of companies led by IBM and leading the development of 32nm chips. This step is dictated by the desire to reduce the cost of developing and mastering a new technology – as you know, the transition to finer technical process standards requires significant costs.

The IBM-led alliance currently includes AMD, Samsung Electronics, Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing (CSMF), Infineon Technologies AG, and Freescale Semiconductor. The terms of cooperation provide for joint development and release of chips until 2021.

Astute readers may recall that Toshiba is already involved in one project aimed at developing 32nm technology. In this case, its partner is another Japanese company, NEC Electronics. The center of gravity of the work within the framework of the bilateral alliance lies on the development of technology in mass production.
