Sanyo Electric Shows Off Its Organic Solar Cell, But Sharp Goes To Record
According to the source, Sanyo Electric first showed a solar cell made using thin-film technology using an organic N-type semiconductor. The conversion efficiency of this element is 3.6%, the area is 0.033 sq.cm. The development was presented at the international conference on solar panels PVSEC-17.
The element is of interest as it utilizes the technology accumulated by Sanyo during the OLED development process. The cell uses DBP (tetraphenyldibenzoperiflanthene, P-type semiconductor) and C60 (N-type semiconductor). Until now, in most thin-film organic solar cells, the low-molecular compound CuPc has played the role of a P-type semiconductor. A prototype of a CuPc thin film element with an area of 0.026 sq.cm was also shown by the company, but in terms of efficiency – 1.4% – it is noticeably inferior to the sample using DBP.
Polymers are attractive in terms of lower manufacturing costs, but Sanyo plans to continue developing low molecular weight materials as they look “more promising from OLED experience.”.
Recall that Sanyo Electric holds the record for the efficiency of solar cells made of polycrystalline silicon – under laboratory conditions, the company was able to demonstrate the conversion of 22% of photon energy into electricity.
At the same time, their colleagues from another Japanese company, Sharp, managed to “take away” the record for organic elements from Sanyo Electric. Thin-film element 1 sq.cm, made from organic semiconductors and shown by this company at the conference, has the highest conversion efficiency in the world – 3.8%. It should be noted that we are talking about officially confirmed results – the indicators of the Sharp element were recorded by specialists of the AIST (National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science And Technology).
