Canon has sold 30 million EOS cameras in 20 years, 10 million of which are digital

Round dates and record shipments usually don’t make it into our news line. The rare exceptions are anniversaries of key industry events such as the invention of the transistor, or some impressive numbers.

Today it is possible to combine two news items into one… no three… no, not even four round numbers, moreover, related to the popular topic of digital photography, so it would be unforgivable to ignore them.

Canon, a renowned manufacturer of photographic equipment, was formed seventy years ago. Twenty years ago, she launched, without exaggeration, the legendary EOS family of SLR cameras. During this time, thirty million of these cameras were shipped to consumers. A third of this number – ten million – are digital “SLRs”.

The family was opened by the EOS 650 (top picture), introduced in March 1987, equipped with an autofocus system. A feature of the product was the world’s first fully electronic system in the lens mount, which provided not only the possibility of interaction between the camera and the lens, but also control of all subsystems of the device. Today we can say with confidence that the correctness of the technical solutions incorporated in the development has been tested by many years of practice, and the debut model opened a new stage in the development of the company. So the name of the family – EOS, which is an abbreviation of the phrase Electro Optical System and coincides in spelling with the name of the ancient Greek goddess of the morning dawn, turned out to be symbolic

The most notable achievements of the family include the professional model EOS-1 (1989), the EOS 5 QD eye-motion focusing camera (1992, outside Japan this product is known as the EOS A2 / EOS A2E or EOS 5) and the compact EOS Kiss model (EOS Rebel XS or EOS 500, 1993). In 2000, Canon introduced the EOS D30 digital SLR with a CMOS sensor. Among the events of this year, we can safely highlight the premieres of the flagship models EOS-1D Mark III and EOS-1Ds Mark III (bottom picture).

The popularity of the family of cameras, both among seasoned professionals and among those who are taking their first steps in the fascinating world of photography, leaves no doubt – the first twenty years of EOS were not in vain. Happy Holidays Canon and keep it up!
