American researchers want to patent an algorithm for “doubling” RAM

An algorithm that allows you to increase the amount of information that fits in embedded RAM was developed by specialists from NEC Laboratories America and Northwestern University (a private educational institution in. Evanston, USA).

The algorithm was named CRAMES (from Compressed RAM for Embedded Systems – “compressed random access memory for embedded systems”). CRAMES will begin commercial use this fall, when NEC phones with the technology are expected to hit the Japanese market, the source said. At the same time, the developers claim that CRAMES is already used in the NEC FOMA 904i phone, which debuted in the European and Japanese markets in June this year.

Previously, it was believed that compressing information in RAM was impossible without increasing latency to an unacceptable level, but the appearance of CRAMES refuted this statement. According to the developers, applying compression to 60% of the memory and leaving 40% uncompressed, the latency can be kept at 2.1%. The top illustration shows an experimental setup that the developers used in their project; on the bottom – a block diagram of the solution.

The trick is that the compressed part of the memory is configured as a solid state drive, and the driver performs the packing and unpacking operations. Both programs and data are compressed. It is important that an algorithm optimized for the criterion of minimum delays is used for compression. In terms of compression, it provides a ratio between the original and compressed data sizes of approximately 2: 1. In other words, using CRAMES is equivalent to doubling the amount of memory while conserving its cost and power consumption.

According to the source, the idea of making data compression a function of the operating system originated at NEC Labs in 2021. The developers have already filed a patent for their product and are planning to license it to other companies.

By the way, I recall the software product RAM Doubler by Connectix, which combined the functions of compressing information in RAM and managing virtual memory. At one time it was a highly salable program for Mac OS, and left the scene only after the price of RAM dropped. In addition, Apple has over time managed to bring to mind its own developments in the field of virtual memory. The RAM Doubler version was also available for systems running Windows (then Windows 3.1, which is now remembered only by old-timers).
