Freescale launches new family of 8-bit microcontrollers – S08D
Today’s embedded system designers demand a high degree of integration and a good price / performance ratio for 8-bit microcontrollers. Freescale has introduced the S08D family of 8-bit instruments in response to these requirements and in the future. According to the company, they have the highest degree of integration among devices with the S08 architecture.
In particular, the S08D family includes 8-bit microcontrollers with a CAN (controller area network) interface, non-volatile electrically erasable memory (EEPROM), and built-in emulation and debugging tools. Built-in CAN interface is especially demanded in automotive and industrial electronics applications. EEPROM provides increased flexibility in system design as it eliminates the need for external memory that can be reprogrammed. Debugging and emulation tools accelerate design and reduce testing and debugging time.
The family currently includes three product lines:
- Flagship line 9S08DZ, which has maximum performance and a rich set of functional blocks (CAN and EEPROM);
- Microcontrollers of the 9S08DN line, equipped with EEPROM, but not having CAN, focused on applications that do not require network support;
- 9S08DV – cost-effective products with CAN interface, but no built-in EEPROM.
To release products of the S08D family, the company uses a 0.25-micron technical process. Microcontrollers of the new family are designed for a wide range of operating temperatures – from -40 ° C to 125 ° C.
