Gefen “extends” Wireless USB 2.0 to 30 meters
A useful device in some cases was released by Gefen. Its Wireless USB Extender cannot be called Wireless USB compliant; rather, we are dealing with a clever marketing ploy.
Recall that the USB wireless interface provides for data transfer at speeds up to 480 Mbps within a radius of 3 meters and 110 Mbps – within a radius of 10 meters. This uses a frequency range from 3.1 to 4.7 GHz with three 528-MHz sub-bands.
The Gefen device uses Wi-Fi 802 for wireless data transmission.11a / b / g, so the data transfer rate even theoretically does not exceed 54 Mbps, but the operating distance can be up to 30 meters.
The manufacturer does not position the novelty for working with devices that intensively exchange data with a PC. Rather, such a wireless 4-port USB hub will connect mice, keyboards, printers, scanners and similar peripherals. Unfortunately, Wireless USB Extender users will not be able to achieve a complete absence of wires at the workplace – power will certainly be required.
The Extension Cord is compatible with Mac OSX, Windows XP, Windows VISTA and Linux and will be sold by Gefen partners for $ 400.
