Samsung promises to start serial production of 2Gb DDR2 chips this year

The South Korean semiconductor manufacturer, known for its achievements in the development and production of memory chips, announced that the company has managed to create the industry’s first 60nm DDR2 DRAM chips with a density of 2 Gb. The company intends to start serial production of such memory before the end of this year.

Compared to 80nm DDR2 chips of the same density, the new products have increased performance – they provide 800 Mbps bandwidth, which corresponds to a 20% increase in data transfer speed. Another important advantage of the new memory is the die size reduced by about 40%.

According to the company, mastering the new memory in mass production will help increase the performance and memory capacity of servers, workstations and laptops.

By using DDR2 chips with a density of 2 Gb, manufacturers are able to reduce the number of components of 8 Gb memory modules (four-rank) in half compared to when these modules are used with chips with a density of 1 Gb (72 chips). In addition, the module on new components consumes 30% less electricity and generates less heat, which increases reliability and reduces requirements for the cooling system. Samsung DDR2 2 Gb chips are suitable for four types of modules: 8 Gb FBDIMM and RDIMM; 4GB UDIMM and SO-DIMM.

Currently, Samsung is already releasing 60nm DDR2 memory – 512 Mbit and 1 Gbit chips.
