Sony announces its SxS PRO memory cards
Sandisk wasn’t the only company to announce the imminent release of SxS memory cards last week. The second such manufacturer was Sony, which is Sandisk’s main partner in the development of SxS. Sony SxS PRO cards will initially be available on the market in two models – SBP-8 8 GB and SBP-16 16 GB.
Recall that such cards, first of all, will find their application in professional video cameras Sony XDCAM EX, which will be launched on the market this fall.
The high data transfer rates of the new flash-based media (Sony claims read speeds of up to 800 Mbps) are achieved thanks to their compatibility with the ExpressCard standard, which is now actively replacing the PC Card.
SxS PRO will be available in the standard ExpressCard / 34 form factor of 34 x 5 x 75mm, half the size of PC Cards.
The spaciousness of the flagship model SBP-16 will be enough to record an hour of high-definition video with the XDCAM EX camcorder.
In general, the Sony announcement differs from the Sandisk announcement only in different manufacturer’s stickers on memory cards. Prices and terms for the products of both companies are identical: $ 500/900, November of this year.
