Toshiba is considering building 450mm factories
In an effort to maintain its leading position in the industry, Toshiba is considering several promising technologies, including the possibility of building factories designed for 450 mm plates and lithography using “hard” ultraviolet radiation (EUV).
In particular, the company is negotiating cooperation in the development of EUV lithography not only with its long-time partner Nikon, but also with ASML Holding NV. Currently, the most advanced technology used by Toshiba and other manufacturers is 193nm immersion lithography.
The problem is that 193nm immersion lithography cannot be used in process technology with rates less than 32nm, which forces manufacturers to look for alternatives. One is EUV technology, which is being developed by a group of nine companies including Gigaphoton, Komatsu, Ushio, Canon, Nikon, Fujitsu, NEC, Toshiba and Renesas.
In addition to directly reducing the size of chip elements by scaling, Toshiba also uses other reserves of increasing density – for example, a bulky layout and memory that can store more units of information per cell.
These developments could accelerate the arrival of 450nm factories. The emergence of the first such production, according to the source, is expected in the period until 2021. Initially, 450nm factories will produce memory.
