1394 Trade Association Introduces New FireWire Specification. The maximum data transfer rate has been quadrupled to 3.2 Gbps.

The specification is named S3200. It is designed based on the IEEE 1394b standard. Interestingly, the new hardware will be able to use the same cables and connectors as the FireWire 800. According to the plan of the association, this will speed up the transition to the new version of the standard, simplify the life of manufacturers and consumers. Moreover, the data transfer and control protocols remained unchanged, which will allow hardware and software developers to quickly switch to the release of faster versions of their products.

Recall that the previous version of the interface, FireWire 800, was standardized in 2021. A well-thought-out scheme and exchange protocol allow this interface to use the channel bandwidth extremely efficiently – more than 97% of the traffic is payload, and the overhead does not exceed 3%. This, in particular, allows external drives with a FireWire 800 interface to exchange data with a PC at speeds of about 90 MB / s. According to the source, this key advantage of 1394b is preserved in the new version of the interface. In other words, the bandwidth limit will be in the region of 400 MB / s, which is noticeably higher than that of competing designs and surpasses the capabilities of any modern hard drive. So the interface will not be a bottleneck when connecting external drives to a PC. Consumer electronics will remain an important area of ​​application for the S3200, as well as in previous versions of FireWire.
