AMD Officially Announces Spider Platform

AMD today officially unveiled a new platform for PC enthusiasts, Spider.

It includes quad-core Phenom processors (65nm process technology), ATI Radeon HD 3800 Series graphics adapters (55nm process technology), seventh series chipsets (65nm process technology) with CrossFireX support and AMD OverDrive software.

We already wrote about the release of ATI Radeon HD 3800 Series last week, you can read it here.

Among the features of the new platform, we note the new revision of the system bus HyperTransport 3.0, which, together with Phenom processors, is capable of providing up to 14.4 GB / s of bandwidth. The integrated memory controller of such CPUs supports DDR2-1066.

Support for CrossFireX technology allows you to use three or even four accelerators of the Radeon HD 3800 family in one system. 42 PCI Express Lines 2.0 chipset on the AMD 790FX chipset provides enough bandwidth to deliver the highest graphics performance.

AMD OverDrive software package will allow you to manage various system parameters in order to improve its performance from Windows operating systems.

The new family of chipsets also features AutoXpress technology, which allows you to “squeeze” the most out of certified memory modules (Intel and NVIDIA already have similar technologies in their arsenal).

Phenom processors have gone beyond their predecessors in terms of energy saving. With a TDP of 95W, the manufacturer claims an average power consumption of 29-32W. Cool’n’Quiet 2.0 and CoolCore allow you to independently control the frequencies of each of the four processor cores.

7-series chipsets have a TDP of 10-12W.

So far, only two Phenom processors have been officially announced (prices in batches from 1000 units):

  • Phenom 9600 (2.3 GHz): $ 283.
  • Phenom 9500 (2.2 GHz): $ 251.
